The Morella City Council acquires the church of the former Augustinian convent to restore it as a public space

The local council allocates 16,000 euros obtained through an IVACE grant, 100% funded, for the acquisition of the church ruins

Work will also continue in the area, following the agreement reached for the purchase of the adjacent property for 31,000 euros in 2027

The project includes the creation of a public square that combines the conservation of heritage remains, green spaces, and improved sanitation for residents

The City Council of Morella has formalized the acquisition of the space corresponding to the church of the former convent of the Agustinos, with the aim of recovering this heritage site and transforming it into a new public space for the enjoyment of the people of Morella and its visitors.

The acquisition of both parts that make up the space of the old church has involved a municipal investment of 16,000 euros through a grant that covers 100% of the cost via the IVACE wind energy compensation fund. Furthermore, the City Council has reached an agreement with the owners for the acquisition of the adjacent property for the amount of 31,000 euros during the year 2027.

With this action, the local council proposes a dual line of work. On one hand, to recover and highlight the remains of the old church, currently an unused plot, and on the other, to expand the public housing stock of Morella with the incorporation of the adjacent property.

The City Council has launched preliminary work with a team of architects, who will study the necessary actions for the recovery, conservation, and adaptation of the remains of the old church.

The second part of the agreement, corresponding to the purchase of the adjacent property for 31,000 euros in 2027, will allow for an increase in municipal assets intended for housing. With this addition, the City Council expands the public housing stock of Morella, with the intention of making more municipal resources available to those seeking access to housing in the municipality.

Furthermore, to raise awareness of this heritage and share its history, the City Council of Morella has scheduled a visit and a talk about the old church of the convent of the Agustinos on October 31st, as part of the European Heritage Days. The activity will allow for a deeper look into the history of the convent complex, an opportunity to see the remains that are still preserved, and an explanation of the work planned for their conservation.

With this acquisition, the City Council of Morella is committed to recovering heritage, creating new public spaces, and expanding municipal housing resources, acting upon a space of significant historical value for the municipality.
