Hiking Trail, Marina de la Torre – Mojácar.
Itinerary description:
The route begins next to the bridge over the Aguas River, heading down to the riverbank next to the soccer field.
A linear trail connecting an area with extensive hotel and golf facilities to the historic center of Mojácar. An ideal route to explore on foot, by bike, or even on horseback. The trail is approximately 3 km long until it reaches the Las Huertas trail, which leads us to our destination: Mojácar Pueblo.
At the mouth of the Aguas River, you can observe various aquatic species, as well as a variety of amphibians.
The Aguas River is the main surface watercourse of the Sorbas Gypsum Karst, a protected semi-desert natural area beneath which rainwater has created a labyrinth of caves and underground cavities at different levels. The karst acts like a sponge, absorbing rainwater that later emerges from various springs, such as Los Molinos, in the Aguas River canyon.
The area surrounding the Aguas River is a wetland, situated in the middle of an arid, desert-like region, teeming with vegetation (oleanders, sedges, reeds, and white poplars), and home to numerous birds and black-spotted turtles.
The river flows into the lagoon at Mojácar Beach.
Aguas River Lagoon: Covering an area of 17 hectares, it is located on Rumina Beach, where the Mojácar lagoons are formed; these lagoons are of great ecological value due to the presence of all kinds of birds.
These small “aquifer forests” serve as a refuge and nesting site for birds such as blackbirds, thrushes, warblers, and chiffchaffs. This type of habitat is also home to some reptiles, such as the water snake, the European pond turtle, and the spur-thighed tortoise, the latter being a protected species.
