Mojácar La Vieja: Overlooking the Aguas River valley, this conical hill is a remnant of the first prehistoric settlement. (6th–7th centuries AD) Formerly known as Montem Sacrum (Sacred Mountain), this Argaric site was first settled by the Visigoths and later by Muslims, who called it Muxacra (Mountain on the Heights). A pyramidal mound next to the Aguas River that was supplied by one of the most impressive preserved cisterns from the ancient Kingdom of Granada.
Many authors agree that “Old Mojácar” was situated right at the cradle of the Argaric culture. (2000 years B.C.) It was the first on the Iberian Peninsula to take the form of an organized society. These people were skilled in bronze metallurgy. Their homes were situated atop a mountain and within walled settlements.
Las Huertas: An area of the municipality that bears witness to Mojácar’s agricultural past. The orange and olive groves are irrigated by water channeled through a canal carved into the Aguas River on its way to the sea.
