First and foremost, it’s important to note that the Medieval Festival is not a market.

On the third weekend of June, the "Briones Medieval" Association organizes the Medieval Festival, which this year takes place on June 20 and 21. During this festival, we’ll visit around fifty themed booths that will bring to life the work, trades, and customs of the past; we’ll admire stately manors and find ourselves in the midst of a sword fight, encountering the Holy Inquisition or companies of flag bearers, and you’ll try your hand at passing the baton. You’ll feast at an honest tavern, a bustling wine cellar, or a well-stocked inn, and you’ll witness an extraordinary sound-and-light show, in which an excellent group of actors will reenact the Peace of Briones—an event that took place on March 31, 1379, between Henry II of Trastámara, King of Castile, and Charles II, King of Navarre.

It’s a weekend where you’ll relive life in medieval times, with an exquisite and meticulous setting where you can learn about the various trades and activities that have disappeared or are in decline today, as well as how conflicts among the townspeople were resolved.

What makes this festival so special is that groups of friends and family—around 700 people—get involved to ensure the event is a complete success.

Because you’ll experience firsthand what medieval trades were like thanks to the numerous themed booths depicting the work and customs of the past: spinners, weavers, troubadours, carters, stonemasons, potters, scribes, nuns, the Order of Calatrava, innkeepers, the Inquisition, and more—a total of 53 themed booths. The greatest reward of hosting an event like this is that it is remembered by all its visitors; this is where the unity of a town and the passion it offers are truly evident.

TIPS

If you want to become just another resident of La Villa, don’t hesitate to bring period-appropriate clothing—remember, we’re in the middle of the 14th century. Wear comfortable shoes; La Villa is cobblestone-paved, and you’ll have to walk around—and why not even dance!
