Evento: 12 Oct 2026
On October 16, 17, and 18, 2026, Setenil de las Bodegas will celebrate its Moors and Christians Festival, a cultural and festive event that transports the town back to one of the most significant episodes in its history: the capture of Setenil in 1484 by the Catholic Monarchs.
Over the course of three days, residents and visitors alike will be able to relive this event through various reenactments and theatrical scenes, while the streets of Setenil fill with characters in period costumes. The celebration commemorates the coexistence and legacy of Christian and Muslim cultures, with the conquest of the ancient Nasrid fortress serving as its central theme.
The reenactment commemorates the resistance of the Setenil fortress, defended by “Cordi,” and its subsequent conquest by the Catholic Monarchs in 1484—a pivotal episode in the military campaign that would culminate in the fall of the Kingdom of Granada. The historical significance of that conquest is even depicted in the choir stalls of Toledo Cathedral.
After the town was captured, Ferdinand the Catholic granted Setenil royal privileges similar to those of Seville, reinforcing the town’s importance following its incorporation into the Crown.
The Moors and Christians Festival thus offers a unique way to discover the history of Setenil, transforming its distinctive streets into the setting for a celebration where history, theater, heritage, and public participation come together.
