Sulayr Festival: Music in the Tinaos 2026

Now in its eleventh year, the Sulayr Festival: Music in the Tinaos, organized by the Pampaneira City Council and the Provincial Council, presents the official 2026 poster—an image that reinforces its identity as a cultural project deeply rooted in the local community and open to artistic experimentation.

Under this year’s theme, “The Strange,” the poster offers a free and contemporary perspective on that which deviates from the norm and, precisely for that reason, is authentic. The concept emerged from a series of conferences on dissidence organized in collaboration with the University of Toronto in the Alpujarra region.

The poster for the 11th edition, designed by Ángeles Lizana, is built around an abstract face that does not intend to be a literal portrait, but rather a symbolic space where music, landscape, architecture, and popular culture converge. The figure represents the festival itself as a meeting point in constant transformation, nourished by the identity of Pampaneira and La Alpujarra.

The facial features are transformed into symbolic elements of the Sulayr Festival: rhythmic shapes that allude to music as a way of feeling and perceiving the world; a nose inspired by the traditional Alpujarra chimney, which introduces folk architecture as a hallmark of identity; and paths that run through the composition, evoking the routes of La Alpujarra and transhumance as symbols of movement, exchange, and cultural continuity. The upper part of the figure blends into the landscape, incorporating references to the Sierra Nevada and the mountains as an essential part of the festival’s creative imagination.

The use of an abstract and unconventional visual language, inspired by the artistic avant-garde movements of the 20th century, connects directly with the theme of this edition. The chromatic diversity, far removed from naturalism, reinforces the idea of diversity and the coexistence of artistic languages.

This poster celebrates the unusual as a creative force and a space of freedom. Through this image, the Sulayr Festival reaffirms its commitment to authenticity, difference, and dialogue between the arts.
