Ambarina Region Museum (Subsite of Dinópolis)
The medieval town of Rubielos de Mora, located 60 km from the city of Teruel, is home to the Región Ambarina center. This center is built on the site of a Konservat-Lagerstätten, a fossilized lake of exceptional preservation—one of the few of its kind in the world.
On display are animals that became trapped at the bottom of the lake and fossilized, as well as those that were covered by the resin of large trees and remain today within the precious red amber.
This unique feature has been used to explain to visitors the techniques paleontologists use to classify fossils. Thus, at this Dinópolis site, visitors can discover how scientists analyze these remains, draw conclusions, and develop theories based on all the information provided by the fossils.
Paleobotany is the central theme of the Amber Region, which also houses original remains and replicas of Morophus, an extinct mammal that once lived in that area.
Its main exhibition focuses on:
Insects in amber: Actual specimens of small organisms and plants trapped in fossilized resin over 20 million years ago.
Lake fossils: Remains of animals that were buried at the bottom of the aquatic ecosystem.
Paleontological work: Educational areas where visitors can learn step-by-step how scientists classify, clean, and analyze the recovered remains.
