Pedro José Fonte, a Distinguished Native of Linares

Born in Linares de Mora in 1777, Pedro José de Fonte became archbishop of Mexico (1815–1837) and was a prominent figure in the ecclesiastical history of the 18th and 19th centuries.

Linares de Mora It is a land of history and of figures who have left their mark far beyond our mountains. Among them stands out Pedro José de Fonte y Hernández Miravete, born in 1777, whose life took him from our small village in Teruel to become Archbishop of Mexico, a position he held from 1815 to 1837.

His career unfolded during a time of great historical upheaval, marked by the War of Independence and the political and social transformations taking place in Spain and the Americas. Although he spent much of his life far from his homeland, he maintained ties with Linares de Mora, contributing to its legacy and becoming part of our town’s historical memory.
