The Nobility of Stone: Coats of Arms and Crests of Alpuente

03 Aug 2026 · 10:42

Alpuente is home to hidden corners where time seems to have stood still. Today we invite you to look up, to take a leisurely stroll through our cobblestone alleys, and to discover a subtle yet fascinating heritage: the coats of arms, crests, and heraldic emblems carved into stone centuries ago that remain discreetly visible, bearing witness to the historical splendor of our town.

Heraldic gems that tell our story

Emblem of Mary and Joseph

Located in the keystone of a semicircular arch, this small sandstone treasure is a true gem of domestic devotion. The coat of arms is divided into two halves: at the top, the inscription “IHS” stands out, with a Latin cross above the “H” (the sacred acronym for Jesus Christ, “Jesus Hominum Salvator”), while at the bottom, the letters “MA” are intertwined, symbolizing the Virgin Mary, Mother of God. Framed beneath the shield, the year 1629 transports us to the 17th century.

The field is pointed ogival and features an elongated Greek cross whose upper and lateral ends terminate in three intersecting circles, a clear symbol of the Holy Trinity.

Coat of Arms of the Martínez de la Raga Family

Elegantly presiding over what was once the main façade of a historic building, this large coat of arms stands out for its size and its refined composition featuring a mixed field (rectangular with a curved tip). Its interior is symmetrically divided into quarters in a cross pattern:

In the upper right quarter and the lower left quarter, a crescent moon with its points facing downward shines, while in the opposite quarters, a tree flanked by two birds stands tall. The whole is crowned with a helmet or helmet with a plume and visor facing the right side, an unmistakable symbol of nobility and gentility.

Coat of Arms of the Villarrasa Family

Carved into the keystone of a masonry arch, this remarkable coat of arms has traditionally been associated with the illustrious Villarrasa family. The outer rectangle is crowned with the inscription “j h s” beneath the omega symbol (God’s eternity), flanked by the letters “A” and “Ño,” alongside the date 1616 at the bottom.

The curvilinear field, crowned by a fleur-de-lis, encloses a marvelous arrangement of five five-pointed stars in a cross pattern surrounded by four negative rhombuses within an oval, accompanied by the inscriptions IOS·EPH. In heraldry, stars have historically been associated with greatness and eternity.

These coats of arms are just a few of those that can be admired, but there are many more to discover in Alpuente and its hamlets.
