Tucked away among the mountainous landscapes of the La Serranía region, in the province of Valencia, the town of Alpuente is home to one of the most fascinating botanical treasures in the Valencian Community: its exceptional juniper forest. Located very close to the hamlet of La Almeza, this natural setting transports visitors to times long past, where nature and the silence of the high mountains merge into an unforgettable experience.
Among the unique specimens that populate this area, “La Juana” stands out on its own, considered the most famous and iconic juniper in the region. Popularly known locally as “trabinas,” this majestic specimen stands out for its truly monumental size and a history of survival that defies the passage of centuries.
A Botanical Giant in the Heart of the Mountains
La Juana is a true living monument, a centuries-old gem whose characteristics amaze any nature lover. With an impressive trunk circumference of 5.78 meters, a crown diameter of 18 meters, and a height of nearly 14 meters, this tree elegantly dominates the high-altitude landscape of the mountain range.
Recently, this iconic juniper was the focus of specialized conservation work. A local environmental officer detected damage to one of its large branches, which had twisted and drooped like a plume, nearly touching the ground. After obtaining the necessary authorization from the owner, the team of specialists carefully pruned the broken branch. To everyone’s relief and delight, the rest of the tree was in enviable health.
A Must-See
Coming to admire this botanical colossus, breathing in the fresh air of La Almeza, and getting lost on the trails of Alpuente is much more than just a hiking route: it is a true tribute to the resilience of nature and a must-see for anyone seeking to connect with the green history of our mountains.
