Alpuente: A Millennia-Long Journey Along the Medieval Orchards Route

Alpuente, recognized as one of the most unique spots in the Valencian region, invites visitors to discover one of its “living gems”: the Medieval Orchards Trail. This itinerary is not just a walk through nature, but a firsthand encounter with over a thousand years of history and hydraulic engineering dating back to the Islamic era.

A Treasure of Islamic Origin

The gardens consist of a series of terraced agricultural plots located on the western slope of Mount San Cristóbal. Their stepped design adapts perfectly to the terrain’s topography to take advantage of the aquifer’s source. What is most fascinating is that, after ten centuries, these gardens—ranging from 300 to 500 square meters—are still cultivated in the same way, using an Arab irrigation system in which water flows down from the Acequia Madre in a stepped pattern from top to bottom, irrigating the gardens.

The Route

The route winds through irrigation channels and along walls, starting on San Blas Avenue near the old washhouse and sink area, offering a spectacular panoramic view of the gardens with the town’s historic center in the background. The path is approximately 0.5 km long and ends next to the old bridge, across from the recently restored city wall.

Along the way, water takes center stage through the Acequia Madre. This structure channels water from “El Reguero” for 2 km until it reaches the higher farming areas.

In addition to the agricultural landscape, the route allows visitors to discover ethnographic features of great value built during the Christian era:

• The town has a communal washhouse and a communal sink at the start of the route. The larger washhouse has separate channels to keep the water used for washing clothes separate from that used for cleaning utensils, thus preventing the mixing of the waters.

• The Washing Area and Watering Trough is located halfway along the route. Dating from the 16th century, this complex was traditionally used to wash the clothes of the sick, thereby preventing the spread of disease among the population.

To enrich the visit, the itinerary has been themed around the history, ethnology, and paleontology of Alpuente. Along the way, hikers will find illustrations and QR codes that link to videos and educational materials, making this walk an immersive experience for all ages.

Visiting the Medieval Gardens of Alpuente is, in short, witnessing how ancestral wisdom and respect for the environment have managed to preserve a productive landscape that is unique in the world.
