Palacio de los Condes de Frigiliana (El Ingenio)

The Palace of the Counts of Frigiliana, popularly known as El Ingenio, is a palace or manor house in Frigiliana (Malaga), integrated in the historic center of the municipality and today linked to the Cane Honey Factory Nuestra Señora del Carmen. It is one of the most representative civil buildings of the town and a key testimony of its urban evolution after the late medieval period. The construction is located in the sixteenth century, at the time of the lords of Frigiliana de la خاندان Manrique de Lara, and responds to a Renaissance architectural language, with survivals or reuse of old materials in part of the building. The heritage documentation cited in the decree of the Historic Site of Frigiliana describes it as a work of the late sixteenth century. Among its most outstanding features are its large scale, the organization on two floors and the relationship with the old fortress of Lízar, from which reused ashlars come from according to several sources. Also mentioned are elements such as the incised al secco painting on its walls and the industrial function it maintains in its interior, housing the only active cane honey factory in continental Europe. Its heritage value is not only architectural, but also historical and industrial, because it reflects the passage of the Andalusian village to modern Christian villa and the early implementation of agro-industrial activities in Frigiliana. Because of its location, it should be understood as a heritage resource of the urban center of Frigiliana, in the province of Malaga, and not of another municipality of the same name or of Mijas or other localities.
