Located at the foot of the castle and in front of what was the Casa de la Villa, the Iglesia de la Sang is one of the oldest religious buildings in Vilafamés and the first Christian temple built in the town after the conquest of the thirteenth century. Its origin is linked to the reorganization of the territory under the Order of Montesa, which exercised the lordship of the town for several centuries. The temple has a single rectangular nave, characteristic of the medieval churches of repopulation. One of its most unique elements is the presence of an old cistern located under the building, probably of earlier origin, which was reused as a crypt and is part of the structure of the temple itself. Throughout the centuries the church underwent several transformations. During the baroque period important reforms were carried out that enriched the interior of the building and adapted the space to the new liturgical needs. The Church of La Sang is today a fundamental testimony of the medieval history of Vilafamés and is part of the Historic-Artistic Site declared of Cultural Interest, reflecting the religious and architectural evolution of the municipality from the Middle Ages to modern times.
