Sant Miquel Chapel · Vilafamés (EN)

POI

The Ermita de Sant Miquel is located about five kilometers from Vilafamés, in the direction of Sant Joan de Moró, located on the slopes of Mount Mollet and in the middle of a natural environment. Access is via a forest track that leads to one of the most emblematic scenic enclaves of the municipality. The construction of the hermitage dates back to 1640 and is linked to the pious foundation of Pere Albella, who stated in his will that part of his assets were to be used for the construction of a hermitage dedicated to San Miguel, patron saint of Vilafamés. In the same document he established that the administration of the place would remain in the hands of the town council. The building has a simple and functional architecture. It consists of two main spaces: the religious part, consisting of a rectangular worship hall with a high choir at the foot and a side sacristy, and an area used as a guest house, where the hermit and the masoveros in charge of the maintenance of the place used to live. The facade stands out for its amplitude and for the porch with arcades that opens towards the esplanade. In front of the complex there is a wide square and, a short distance away, a spring that has been a traditional meeting point for visitors and popular celebrations. The area where the hermitage is located is part of the Paraje Natural Municipal de Sant Miquel, a protected area that combines heritage, nature and tradition in one of the most representative landscapes of Vilafamés.
