Of Arab origin, it was conquered by Jaime I in 1233. It has undergone various reforms throughout its history, being its oldest vestiges of the fourteenth century, when the master of the Order of Montesa forces the inhabitants of Vilafamés to repair and strengthen the fortifications of the place. It suffered important attacks during the Carlist wars, in the 19th century, producing the adaptation of the fortification system to the new techniques of the war, being a good example of it the central tower of circular plant that belongs to this moment.
