The Church of the Assumption of Our Lady is the main religious temple of Vilafamés and one of the most outstanding buildings of its historical complex. Located halfway up the slope of the hill on which the town sits, it is an essential part of the urban landscape of the old town. Its construction began in 1594 following the design of the master of the Seo de Tortosa Martín de Mendoza, and the works were executed by the master Juan Palacios. During the 18th century the temple was enlarged with the construction of the Communion Chapel and a new presbytery, completing these reforms in 1783. Later, in 1806, the dome of the transept was rebuilt. The church has a single nave with transept and chapels between buttresses, covered by a barrel vault with lunettes and decorated with baroque elements. Inside, the main altarpiece from the 17th century, the fresco paintings in the Communion Chapel and various ornamental and ceramic elements of Valencian tradition stand out. Built mainly with stone rodeno, characteristic of the environment, the church reflects the architectural evolution between the end of the Renaissance and the Valencian baroque. Today it is one of the main heritage references of Vilafamés and a key element to understand the historical evolution of the municipality.
