POI

La Torreta is an old watchtower integrated in the historic center of Vilafamés, located near the parish church and within the medieval enclosure of the town. It is listed as an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC) within the Historic-Artistic Site declared in 2005. Its origin is related to the defensive system of the medieval nucleus. These towers were part of the fortified structure that protected the primitive village located around the castle and the Quartijo neighborhood. The oldest urban enclosure was delimited by walls and towers that controlled the accesses and reinforced the defense of the population. La Torreta sits partially on the rock of the hill and has a rectangular floor plan with several heights, a common typology in medieval watchtowers. Over time the building was adapted for residential use, incorporating interior modifications for use as a dwelling. Today it is one of the most representative elements of the old defensive system of Vilafamés and a testimony of the military and urban organization of the medieval town.
