The Roca Grossa is one of the most striking icons of the historic center of Vilafamés. This huge mass of reddish stone, embedded in the middle of the street that ascends to the castle, seems to defy gravity by leaning on the slope of the urban layout itself. It is a large block of rodeno, the characteristic stone of the environment, formed millions of years ago as part of the geological processes that shaped the hill on which the town sits. When the town began to grow in medieval times, the streets and houses were adapted to its presence, integrating it into the urban route instead of removing it. Its size and unique position inevitably generate a sense of wonder among visitors. The rock seems to be balanced on the hillside, giving the impression that it could slide at any moment, which makes it one of the most unique images of the old town. Over time, the Roca Grossa has become one of the great symbols of Vilafamés. Its presence reflects the close relationship between the natural landscape and the architecture of the town, where the rock itself is part of the urban fabric. Today it is one of the most photographed places and an essential stop during the tour of the historic center.
