The 442nd Airfield is a historical vestige of the Spanish Civil War located in the municipality of Vilafamés. This airfield was part of the network of airfields built by the Republican army to support air operations in the Mediterranean front during the conflict.
The facility was conceived as a field airfield, adapted to the military needs of the time. These infrastructures used to take advantage of relatively flat and well-communicated terrain, allowing the take-off and landing of aircraft performing defense, reconnaissance and support tasks for frontline operations.
Although today there are no large buildings, the site retains part of the configuration of the old airfield and is a significant element of the historical memory of the territory. Its existence allows us to understand the strategic importance that the interior of Castellón had during the Civil War and the role that these airfields played in the organization of the Republican aviation.
Currently, Airfield 442 is part of the historical heritage of Vilafamés and expands the historical narrative of the municipality beyond its well-known medieval legacy.
