Vilafamés Castle dominates the profile of the municipality from the top of the hill on which the old town sits. Its origin dates back to the Muslim period, when the fortress was part of the defensive network that controlled this inland territory of Castellón. After the Christian conquest in the 13th century, the castle was reformed and adapted to new military and administrative functions. The castle acquired special relevance during the 19th century, in the context of the Carlist Wars, when Vilafamés became a strategic enclave in the confrontations between Carlists and liberals. The fortress was occupied, reinforced and was the scene of several military episodes during these conflicts. Although today the remains of walls, towers and defensive structures are preserved, the whole allows us to understand the importance of this enclave throughout history. From its surroundings you can also get some of the most extensive views of the inland landscape of Castellón, with panoramic views over the Pla de l'Arc and the mountains surrounding the town. Today the castle is one of the most representative heritage elements of Vilafamés and the highlight of the tour of its historical complex, from where the origin and evolution of the town around this medieval fortress can be understood.
