San Miquel D'Espinalbar Hermitage

1. San Miquel D'Espinalbar Hermitage

The first information about this hermitage dates back to 1324. Located in the Espinalbar mountain range - a name derived from the hawthorn tree - it was rebuilt between 1610 and 1612 after a fire. The original images were destroyed in the Civil War, but one of San Miquel was donated in the 1940s. Next to it, two ruined farmhouses recall times of pilgrimages, processions and neighborhood meetings. The roof collapsed in 1988. In May, bunches of hawthorn and holly were blessed, and the whole village participated in a day of faith, food, games and coexistence.
Hermitage of La Magdalena

2. Hermitage of La Magdalena

The hermitage of Santa Magdalena, located in the muela of Valderrobres, requires an ascent on foot of about twenty minutes. It is a fortified cave construction of the sixteenth century, rising in a natural cave at the top of the mountain. Although very deteriorated, Templar symbols such as pate crosses can still be seen. It preserves added walls and steps carved in stone. In its interior there are bowls that could have originated in more ancient cults. During the post-war period, it served as a refuge for the Maquis and it is believed that it could also have been used by the Cathars who fled from Languedoc.
Hermitage of the Saints

3. Hermitage of the Saints

The hermitage of Saints Abdón and Senén, located in Valderrobres, has its origin probably around 1420, although it has undergone several reconstructions over time, as in 1685, the year recorded on its facade. At that time the dwelling of the hermit was added, in charge of taking care of the temple, teaching the young people of the farmhouses and ringing the bell. This tradition lasted until the 1930s. Every August 19, the population comes in pilgrimage to celebrate a festive day with food and traditional games in this singular place of the Matarraña.
