Stops

6 stop(s) in this experience

1

Street "la plaza".

From the Plaza Mayor continues the street known as "La Plaza", where more than 25 houses are still preserved with carved stumps in the shape of faces, possibly with the intention of scaring away evil spirits. In it stands out the stately home of Los Ageros, with granite friezes and balconies. The Portuguese researcher J. Leite de Vasconcellos stayed in this residence during his study of the Fala between 1925 and 1935. In nearby streets, such as San Juan, typical Mañegas houses are preserved, with cellar, dwelling and attic, built with traditional elements such as cantareiras or trancas.
2

Street "city".

In the street known as "Ciudad" there are numerous traditional cellars, called boigas in mañegu. First you access the boiga de afora, at a lower level than the street, where tools were kept, the yunta, the pig in a cortelha, the chickens in o galinheiru, the straw in o palheiru and the pesebreiras. Further to the back is the boiga de adentru, at a higher altitude, which is accessed by stairs. There, the wine and oil vats were stored, as well as the demijohns with the broths elaborated by the family.
3

Street "el puerto" (the port)

As you walk along El Puerto Street, you will see symbols engraved in the granite stone that tell the story of ancient trades. One represents the shoemakers: scissors, boots, punches... where they used to clean and repair shoes. Next to a facade there is a polished indentation, where they sharpened their tools. Further on, another relief shows two horses, their riders, a tree, the sun and the moon: it is the old post office, symbol of the exchange of mail between villages, both day and night, according to the seasons of the year. A street with history carved in stone.
4

Street "la iglesia" (the church)

In the center of the village stands the church of San Martín de Tours, from the 17th century, with three naves and ashlar walls. It houses three panels by the painter Luis de Morales and a majestic altarpiece from the 18th century. Also of note are Baroque images of St. Peter and St. Paul, and carvings of great value such as the Virgin of the Star or the Immaculate Conception. Next to it, the Casa de los Ojestos (18th century), with a linteled doorway and traditional cobblestones, hosted in 1910 the philologist Ramón Menéndez Pidal during his studies on the Xálima Fala.
5

Main square

Located in the Main Square of San Martín de Trevejo, the bell tower, carved in ashlar stone, has a prismatic structure with two bodies separated by a cornice. It has zoomorphic gargoyles and semicircular openings, as well as a clock and the coat of arms of Charles V, who granted the town the title of "Very Noble and Very Loyal". In front of it stands the Casa del Comendador, with an ashlar façade. The 1888 fountain and the stream, which comes from the Pico Jálama, give life to the square, where the wooden arcades on granite pillars, typical of the "portais en mañegu", stand out.
6

Funerary stele "calle concejo" (council street)

In the Tourist Office (Calle Concejo, 1) you can see a funerary stele found in San Martín de Trevejo, belonging to a group typical of the southwest peninsular. Made of granite, it is 1.50 m high, 78 cm wide and 21 cm thick. Three sides are rounded and the fourth is buried. It has engravings: a central shield, a spear in the upper part, a sword below, a possible mirror on the right and, on the left, an "E" shaped element in the broken area, which is believed to be part of the original design.
