High Portal or San Antón Portal · Puertomingalvo (EN)

POI

This portal, built in the 14th century, is an example of a tower-door that, at present, has lost much of its original height since it protected one of the most important entrance roads to the town. In its exterior appearance, the contrast between the stately entrance arch, which faces the outskirts of the town, and a very low arch, less monumental in appearance, on its intramural side, is especially noteworthy. The most interesting element of its passageway is a Gothic piece composed of a finely carved ledge and canopy that shelter a modern figure of San Antón. Next to this portal is a large building with a magnificent façade. It is the old Hospital de Pobres (Hospital for the Poor), which was not really a hospital in the sense that the word is used today. Formerly, a hospital was rather an institution of religious or sometimes municipal ownership, which served as a temporary shelter for walkers, beggars and pilgrims.
