Puertomingalvo City Council

The Town Hall building of this small town dates back to the 15th century and is one of the best examples of civil Gothic architecture in the province of Teruel. It is all of ashlar stone, with one-piece windows and crowned by a spectacular carved wooden eaves, fully maintains its medieval council structure with dungeons, rooms and other dependencies. Around the corner, at the entrance to the dungeons, is the exhibition of the interpretation center of the castles, where we are sure to learn a lot about these buildings in the Maestrazgo area.

Puertomingalvo Castle

The existence of the castle is known as early as April 1202, with the Arabic name of castrum de Avingalbón or Avingalon. The Aragonese king Pedro II the Catholic donated this castle and that of Linares de Mora to the bishop of Zaragoza, Don Ramón de Castrocol, and to the Chapter of the Cathedral. In 1532 Fadrique de Portugal, archbishop of Zaragoza, received the royal mandate to visit and restore a series of castles in Teruel, among which was the castle of El Puerto; he ordered the masters Juan de la Mira and Juan Galí to visit all these castles. The works were not carried out because they entailed an enormous economic cost. Abandoned for centuries, the parade ground was used as a cemetery until rehabilitation work began, sponsored by the DGA, in the decade of 1985-95. The fortress, of small dimensions, stands on a rocky limestone outcrop located at the western end of the town. At the present time it conserves part of its original physiognomy in quite good condition, although the crenellated tops have been lost. or what concerns the enclosure, of trapezoidal form, it is curious to observe that the main wall has a tracing in Z. The parade ground is accessed through a tetragonal tower-door; the other tower, pentagonal in plan and ten meters wide, is the keep; since the Middle Ages it was the occasional residence of the lords of Puertomingalvo; at present, it houses a permanent exhibition of ethnological pieces. The parade ground has been recently refurbished; with the addition of a stage located in front of the door of the keep, the population can enjoy all kinds of shows. The Maestrazgo Cultural Park has set up the Maestrazgo Castles Interpretation Center in the dungeons of the Town Hall: its spacious rooms exhibit, together with an idealized model of the original configuration of this fortification, a whole set of keys - graphic, audiovisual, documentary and plastic - that enable a proper understanding of the medieval fortifications. There is the possibility of arranging a guided tour of the castle by visiting the Tourist Office. The price of the visit is 1 € per person for the maintenance of the facilities.

High Portal or San Antón Portal

High Portal or San Antón Portal

This portal, built in the 14th century, is an example of a tower-door that, at present, has lost much of its original height since it protected one of the most important entrance roads to the town. In its exterior appearance, the contrast between the stately entrance arch, which faces the outskirts of the town, and a very low arch, less monumental in appearance, on its intramural side, is especially noteworthy. The most interesting element of its passageway is a Gothic piece composed of a finely carved ledge and canopy that shelter a modern figure of San Antón. Next to this portal is a large building with a magnificent façade. It is the old Hospital de Pobres (Hospital for the Poor), which was not really a hospital in the sense that the word is used today. Formerly, a hospital was rather an institution of religious or sometimes municipal ownership, which served as a temporary shelter for walkers, beggars and pilgrims.

Virgen de la Purificación and San Blas Church

As a consequence of the Protestant Reformation, the Catholic Church had to make a great effort to maintain the unity of its faithful and one of its consequences was the spectacular increase in the size of some temples of the Baroque period, such as this one from the second quarter of the 18th century. Its internal structure, composed of three wide naves of equal height, conforms the so-called church-hall typology, so called because it is reminiscent of the large civil buildings for meetings such as commodities exchanges and markets. Other outstanding elements are its chevet, with a vault of segments, and the baroque paintings preserved in its walls and roofs. The façade is the element of greatest artistic value in the exterior view of the building and constitutes a clear example of the baroque façades of this period. Although its elements have a classicist tinge, the way they are combined manages to create a sense of movement by highlighting the vertical axis on the horizontal as well as the contrasts between light and shadow caused by the pillars that advance on the plane of the facade. The tower, built in stone masonry, unlike the rest of the church, is dated 1739 and is divided into two bodies: the first is very high and solid appearance, and the second, plays the role of bell tower.

El Portalico

Puertomingalvo, with its imposing castle and medieval wall, transports us to a past full of stories and legends. The presence of the Christians in the 12th century did not erase the traces of its Muslim origin. It is believed that both the castle and the wall date back to the 10th century, when the region was under Arab rule. Of the original wall, only some sections remain, being the Portalico one of the most emblematic. This secondary entrance to the village has stood the test of time, maintaining its original function for centuries. Through its arch, formerly flanked by the wall, we can imagine the hustle and bustle of daily life in medieval Puertomingalvo.
