4 stop(s) in this experience

1

Praza da catedral - Historic Center of Mondoñedo

The nucleus of Mondoñedo arose in the 3rd century with the descent of the settlers from the castros to the valley. Consolidated as an episcopal see in the 12th century, its medieval layout was transformed after a great fire in the 15th century and baroque reforms in the 18th century. Today, the city is a melting pot of history where the majestic Cathedral presides over ancient streets that invite you to discover centuries of urban heritage.
2

Menhir da Toxiza

Mondoñedo keeps traces of the Neolithic in its upper part. It stands out an imposing granite menhir of 3.35 meters high, nailed in a natural passage of animals. This piece of the Megalithic period (4,000-2,000 B.C.) has a triangular shape that narrows towards the top, eroded by time. It is an ancestral symbol of the first farmers, located in an environment of water and millenary routes.
3

Mámoa de Pena Muñeite

This Neolithic monument is a mámoa: an artificial elevation of 350 $m^2$ that hides a funerary dolmen. With 22 meters long, it served as a collective burial and milestone to delimit the territory and transit routes. Its oval ground plan has a central depression, the result of ancient plundering motivated by legends of treasures, remaining today as a sentinel of history.
4

Castro de Zoñán

This Iron Age fortified settlement spans from the 9th century BC to the 5th century AD. With an original extension of 8 hectares, its excavated area reveals dwellings, kitchens and warehouses organized in family quarters. These remains show the evolution from the Late Bronze Age to the Roman world, offering a unique window into the community life and strategic defense of Mondoñedo.
