Parish Church of Santa María
Mojácar
POI

Built in the late sixteenth century (1560) on the old mosque that was located in this area. The master builder Sebastián Segura began the works. Reconverted to Christian worship after the reconquest, it fulfilled a double function: religious and as a defensive fortress. It is very striking the simplicity of its interior, which houses a beautiful and significant fresco painting made in the 60's by an itinerant painter. The church had lost the altarpiece of the main altar during the events of the civil war. In his small collection of imagery has carvings of St. Augustine and the Virgin of the Rosary, Patrons of the City. In a beautiful corner of the Plaza del Parterre (former Muslim cemetery) is the exact reproduction of one of the scenes of the Reconquest that are recreated in the choir stalls of the Cathedral of Toledo. Handcrafted by the artist Itziar Ortuzar.
