Parish Church of Santa María

Built in the late sixteenth century (1560) on the old mosque that was located in this area. The master builder Sebastián Segura began the works. Reconverted to Christian worship after the reconquest, it fulfilled a double function: religious and as a defensive fortress. It is very striking the simplicity of its interior, which houses a beautiful and significant fresco painting made in the 60's by an itinerant painter. The church had lost the altarpiece of the main altar during the events of the civil war. In his small collection of imagery has carvings of St. Augustine and the Virgin of the Rosary, Patrons of the City. In a beautiful corner of the Plaza del Parterre (former Muslim cemetery) is the exact reproduction of one of the scenes of the Reconquest that are recreated in the choir stalls of the Cathedral of Toledo. Handcrafted by the artist Itziar Ortuzar.

City Gate

This is the original access to Mojácar. The current gate was rebuilt in the sixteenth century, on the original Arab gate, which opened in the wall. It served as a means of communication to the slope of La Fuente and the Plaza del Caño. It bears the coat of arms of the city, with the double-headed eagle of the house of Austria. On it can be seen a tower, a key and a scimitar, and the legend "To the very noble and loyal city of Mojácar, key and protection of the kingdom of Granada".

Plaza Nueva Viewpoint

The existence of this square dates back to the late sixteenth century, leaving nothing of its old layout. After the reform carried out in 1960, when some of its old buildings were demolished and the current access to the village was opened. Last reform carried out in 2016. Nowadays the Plaza Nueva is the nerve center of the village, a place of obligatory passage for residents and visitors and a bustling meeting point. Located in this viewpoint, we dominate an impressive view of the Valley of the Pyramids and Mojácar la Vieja, conical mountain that was the first eneolithic settlement. From here, the view reaches the vast valley that closes the mountains of Cabrera, Bédar and Almagrera and finally opens to the sea. From left to right, we can see Turre, Bédar, Los Gallardos, Vera, Garrucha, Cuevas de Almanzora, Villaricos, the river Aguas, the orchards, etc. In the square we find the Hermitage of Nuestra Señora de los Dolores, built in the sixteenth century on the old Moorish mosque, and rebuilt in the eighteenth century. It is privately owned.

Here is located a viewpoint with a frontal view to the sea that complements the one enjoyed from the viewpoint of the Plaza Nueva. It was a watchtower and stronghold. Only a cistern is preserved, of Muslim origin, which currently houses an Art Center. The castle was built in the thirteenth century, renovated after the Christian conquest and again after the earthquake suffered in 1518. It was losing prominence as the danger of Moorish incursions disappeared, although, in the eighteenth century it still had a warden, appointed by the House of Alba. In the middle of the last century, was rebuilt on its ruins, by the Colombian pianist Enrique Arias, an auditorium where international music festivals were held.

New building that had its last reform in 1987. In the facade we can emphasize the mosaic with the shield of the two-headed eagle and the legend of the city, "to the very noble and very loyal city of Mojácar". The symbol of the indalo that presides over the floor of this square is striking. Dominating it, a giant tree, Ficus Benjamin, brought by an emigrant from the Americas.

Arrabal

This neighborhood reached its maximum extension in the 19th century. We are inclined to think that the Jewish colony of Mojácar lived here, as shown by the low and wide doors, lobed arches, monotony of the interior planes and that it is precisely the only place from where the sea cannot be seen.

Its drinking water comes from a natural spring. Its existence is already mentioned in ancient Arabic texts. It was undoubtedly the key to the founding of the village. The fountain was remodeled in the 19th century and rebuilt in the 1980s. Its precious waters have served over the centuries to quench thirst, to wash and to irrigate plants. The washerwomen, so as not to contaminate the water that irrigated the orchards, washed from the inside out with their feet in the water. An important piece of Mojácar's history is reflected in the inscription stone.

Mojacan cuisine

Nowadays, when the traveler arrives to Mojacar, he discovers the diversity and the gastronomic quality of the restaurants and bars. A quality that has not been given, but conquered day by day. Aware of the importance of maintaining the culinary legacy, we keep the authentic taste of those simple dishes and stews that comforted the appetite in the past, and that are longed for and sought after by many of our visitors. Among them, there are the gurullos, the stews of balls, the paprika broth, the migas, the rice stews or even the cous-cous, fruit of our Andalusian legacy. Mojácar is a tourist town, and we must not forget that the gastronomy, not only constitutes a vital necessity in the experience of the trip, but a motivation or stimulation of the same one. It is the work of all the gastronomy and in general the restoration in our Municipality, to consolidate like a differentiating attractiveness of our tourist destiny. Today we know that certain tastes and customs have changed, the culinary influences of other latitudes are making themselves felt, and the presence of new products has come to consolidate as substantial raw material of certain dishes. We are moving towards a modern, modern and very elaborate cuisine, but always with the common denominator and the presence of local products. Our location next to the Mediterranean Sea, the high quality of Almeria's vegetables, the oils of our region, etc., are, among others, precious treasures turned into appetizing dishes. Among the most common fish of the area, we should highlight the "gallo pedro", which is delicious grilled or fried, the "espetones" (grilled fish, inserted as a skewer) of sardines or sardines, squid grilled or grilled, anchovies in batter or vinegar, cuttlefish in sauce, octopus in vinaigrette or the exquisite Garrucha shrimp. Other delicious fishes are the mullets, red mullets and palometas. These dishes find a great traveling companion, as are the wines of Almeria surprising and increasingly care. Wines that compete in the market among the best and reap awards. I would say, that this is the main exponent of this high culinary quality in Mojácar, the quality of the raw material, for its proximity, the diversity as a bet and compatible alternative to the traditional dishes and the vocation of the Mojácar people to attend the visitor.
