Wall

Wall

The wall of Mirambel, almost intact in its layout, has recovered its original appearance thanks to a recent restoration. Built in masonry and ashlar, it preserves lowered towers such as the Bastion, loopholes and defensive windows. Its five portals are architectural jewels: San Valero and San Roque, with semicircular arches; the Portal de la Fuente, sober and robust; the Portal del Estudio, with latticework and interior chapel; and the spectacular Portal de las Monjas, with tower, chapel, clay latticework and defensive dormer. An enclosure full of history in every stone.

Castle (13th century)

The castle-palace of San Juan is emblematic of Mirambel's medieval legacy. After its conquest in 1169 by Alfonso II, it passed through the orders of the Holy Redeemer, the Temple and the Hospital, under which it remained until the 19th century. During the Carlist wars, it was the logistical base of Cabrera and the headquarters of the Supreme Board of Aragon, Valencia and Murcia. Although it was demolished during that period, the remains of ashlar walls, arches and staircases still stand next to the church. Recently, its ruins have been consolidated and the original crenellated walls have been restored.

Portal de las Monjas

The Portal de las Monjas, attached to the convent of the Augustinian Nuns of Mirambel, is one of the most unique structures in the walled enclosure. It has a semicircular arch on the outside and a pointed arch on the inside, crowned by three levels of closed gallery with clay and plaster latticework, which make it unmistakable. In its lower part is the sacristy of the convent and above the arch, an open chapel dedicated to Santo Tomás. The complex, with its cylindrical tower and its defensive attic, is an icon of the architectural heritage of Maestrazgo.

Old town

The historic center of Mirambel, awarded the Europa Nostra Prize, is one of the most beautiful in Aragon. This medieval complex, perfectly walled, belonged to the Order of San Juan. Strolling through its cobblestone streets is like traveling back in time: the Portal de las Monjas with its latticework, the church of Santa Margarita, the Lonja and the convent of the Augustinian nuns stand out. The Maestrazgo Heritage Interpretation Center invites you to learn about the local architectural legacy. In addition, its trails allow you to explore the natural environment and connect with neighboring towns such as La Cuba or Tronchón.
