San Roque's viewpoint and chapel

On the promontory of Misiera point, a place that invites you to stop and enjoy the magnificent views of both the village of Llastres and its bay, one of the most spectacular that can be obtained from the Cantabrian Sea. The chapel, dedicated to San Roque, one of the patron saints of sailors to whom devotion is paid in Lastres, was a key point for whale fishing. From the elevated areas the watchmen watched the passage of these large cetaceans. When one of these whales was sighted, they lit a bonfire as a warning signal. Once the smoke was detected, the bell of the chapel was rung from San Roque to alert all the fishermen, who hurried to catch them.

Calle Real

In this street we can observe numerous houses of marine style. They are three-story buildings, in which the first floor is used as a cellar, the second floor as a dwelling, while on the second floor are located the rooms. The entrance to the houses was through the cellars, or through the back of the buildings directly to the second floor, due to the unevenness of the terrain. Almost all the houses had salt wells installed in their cellars as a means of subsistence. In these cellars, the fishermen even raised pigs during the time when they did not go to sea due to bad weather, and then sold them at the market in Colunga.
