Church of Santa María la Mayor

Church of Santa María la Mayor

Icon of Ledesma next to the river and its bridges, this church contains 900 years of history. Erected in the 13th century as a Romanesque temple, it evolved with Gothic, Renaissance and neoclassical elements. Its altarpiece, dedicated to the Assumption, stands out for its neoclassical style with a baroque floor plan. The shell-shaped apse recalls the works of Rodrigo Gil de Hontañón. Next to the transept is the tomb of the infant Don Sancho, grandson of King Alfonso X the Wise.

It is the only preserved gate of the old wall of Ledesma. Also known as the Martyrs' or the Boilermakers' gate, it has two peralted arches flanked by cylindrical cubes. It was built in the time of Fernando II over Roman remains. According to legend, Saint Nicholas, son of the Moorish king Galofre, was martyred here after converting to Christianity. A church was built in his honor in the former friars' field.

Emblem of the Historic Complex, this fortress invites visitors to discover its uses and secrets through panels and interactive resources. Juana de Castilla, "La Beltraneja", virtually guides the visitor through its history, from its origins with Fernando II of León to its transformation under Don Beltrán de la Cueva. It also narrates the project of the Palace that never existed, whose remains are under the gardens, accompanied by documentation exhibited in the enclosure.

Alonso Andrea's walk viewpoint

Located within the walled enclosure, this landscaped walkway offers one of the most impressive views of the town. From here you can see the Salamanca pasture, the escarpments of the Tormes, bridges and the hermitage of the Virgen del Carmen. Its name honors Alonso Andrea, distinguished ledesmino and co-founder of Caracas, whose heroic act confronting pirates inspired, according to some, the character of Don Quixote.

Rosquillas de ledesma

Ledesma doughnuts, a gastronomic symbol with more than 200 years of history, are made with flour, eggs, sugar, butter and milk. With a spiral shape, compact texture and golden tones, they are irresistible to locals and visitors alike. This traditional recipe has been passed from generation to generation and is still alive today thanks to two local bakeries that make them in an artisanal way, bringing their flavor to homes all over Spain.
