Essence of Matarraña Calatravo (EN)

It is one of the most beautiful squares in Aragon. Presided over by the 16th century Town Hall, it stands out for its Renaissance style and its imposing arcades. The town hall combines the functions of palace and market, reflecting the ancient economic power of the town. Its wide arches and balconies create a harmonious stone ensemble where social and mercantile life was celebrated.

This 17th century baroque temple stands on the remains of an earlier gothic church. Its facade is of an elegant sobriety and its large interior impresses with its luminosity. Located in the high part, its silhouette is inseparable from the profile of the village. It has witnessed the local history and retains a stately air that defines the character of La Fresneda.

Located on the outskirts, this complex partially carved into the rock is a magical place. Although it is in ruins, the structure of the old convent and its church are overwhelming for their magnitude and their integration with nature. It is a space of silence and decadent beauty that evokes the monastic life and the legends of Marian apparitions in a wild environment.

Located at the highest point of the village, the remains of this Calatrava fortress offer the best views of the Matarraña river valley. It was a fundamental military strategic point during the Reconquest and the later dominion of the Order. Strolling within its walls allows you to imagine medieval frontier life and enjoy an unforgettable sunset over the rooftops of the village.
