Santa Maria Gate

The Gate of Santa Maria, the only survivor of the three that had the wall, is emblematic of Hita. Despite its small scale, it is a beautiful example of 15th century military architecture. The two garitones that flank the pointed arch and the remains of the matacán that crowns the set are more ornamental than defensive elements. The previous elements together with the Mendoza coat of arms that presides over the door symbolize the power of the nobility. In this case, they represent the Marquis of Santillana, Lord of Hita.

Archpriest Square

We find it just across the Puerta de Santa Maria. Throughout the Middle Ages, the Jewish quarter of Hita occupied this space delimited by arcades and houses of popular flavor. Some brick facades stand out, reminding us of the Mudejar building tradition of Muslim origin.

Medieval caves

The cellars of Hita were excavated under the old town during the Middle Ages. The wine was stored in jars and its commercialization was the responsibility of the Jewish families of the town until the end of the 15th century. Production ceased completely in the first half of the 20th century. The "bodegos" are dwelling caves located in the upper quarter. They were inhabited from the Middle Ages until the 1950s. They occupy small platforms created on the hillside. The interior, excavated in the shape of a vault, is compartmentalized. A corridor connects the different rooms: the kitchen with its fireplace, the bedroom alcoves, the storeroom and the stable located at the back of the cave.
