El Humilladero Chapel

El Humilladero Chapel

Built at the beginning of the 15th century and also known as Ermita de la Santa Cruz, this small temple was declared a National Monument in 1931. It stands in the Sierra de las Altamiras, surrounded by a lush forest of pines, oaks and chestnut trees, just 4 kilometers from Guadalupe. Its square structure is reminiscent of the temple of the monastery, with an elegant sobriety and numerous Gothic elements visible on each of its faces. A spiritual and natural enclave, perfect to enjoy the history and landscape of Extremadura.

Historic center (XIV-XVI centuries)

Much more than its emblematic monastery, Guadalupe was declared a Historic-Artistic Monument in 1943 for its architectural and cultural wealth. Born around the Royal Monastery in the fourteenth century, its hamlet grew with medieval layout, winding streets and mountain architecture. Houses of adobe, ashlars and wooden balconies make up a unique urban landscape. The Colegio de Infantes, the network of old hospitals, the Iglesia de la Trinidad, the Jewish quarter and the remains of the wall stand out. All this makes Guadalupe a historical treasure beyond its sanctuary.

Royal Monastery of Our Lady of Guadalupe (XII-XVIII centuries)

Nestled in the heart of Las Villuercas, the Royal Monastery of Guadalupe is a spiritual and artistic reference of Extremadura. It was founded in the 14th century after the miraculous apparition of the Virgin to the shepherd Gil Cordero, and grew under the patronage of Alfonso XI. For centuries, it was a center of devotion and culture, guarded by the Hieronymites and later by the Franciscans. Its architecture combines Gothic, Mudejar and Baroque styles. Declared a World Heritage Site in 1993, it houses works by Zurbarán, El Greco and valuable museums. Every September 8, it is the epicenter of the Extremaduran festivity.

New or Holy Trinity Church

The Church of the Holy Trinity, known as the New Church, was built between 1730 and 1736 under the patronage of Pedro Nuño Florentín, a descendant of Christopher Columbus and a minister of Philip V. The project was the work of Manuel de Larra Churriguera. Of baroque style, it has three naves and a great dome with lantern over the transept. After being abandoned by the confiscations of 1835, it was restored in 1978 and today it is used as an auditorium and exhibition hall. Its baroque facade and its monumentality make it one of the heritage emblems of Guadeloupe.
