A Medieval Treasure in the Heart of Matarraña (EN)

The Font de Vila has its origin between the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, with Gothic elements such as its pointed arch and a subway gallery lined with stone. In 1602 was built the Renaissance set that is preserved today: fountain, trough and sinks, the work of the stonemason Anton Barano. The spout is sheltered by a semicircular arch, and the water comes from the Pedrera, conducted by a V-shaped qanat. The ventilation shafts and sandstone ashlars show the quality and age of the work.

Declared a Historic-Artistic Site, it is one of the best preserved of Matarraña. To stroll through its streets is to discover ancestral stone houses with wrought iron balconies, noble coats of arms and portals that are ancient gates of the wall. The Plaza Mayor stands out with its Renaissance town hall and the characteristic "perches", arcaded passageways that connect corners full of medieval charm.

The Juan Cabré Museum, managed by the Government of Aragon, pays tribute to the Calaceitan archaeologist Juan Cabré Aguiló (1882-1947). Born as a monographic museum dedicated to his figure, it has evolved to become a cultural reference. Its collections are structured in three areas: the life and work of the researcher, an outstanding section of Contemporary Art and another of Ethnology, which show the archaeological, artistic and popular heritage of the environment.
