Bulnes's Orange Tree / Picu Urriellu (EN)
Bulnes’s Naranjo, also known as Picu Urriellu, is one of Spain’s most iconic mountains. From the small village of Bulnes, its vertical and majestic silhouette rises as a symbol of the strength and beauty of the Picos de Europa.
At 2,519 metres, Picu Urriellu is one of the most recognisable peaks in the central massif of the Picos de Europa. Its vertical and challenging west face has made it an icon of mountaineering since the late 19th century.
What makes Naranjo de Bulnes unique is not just its height, but its shape. A mass of limestone that rises abruptly above the landscape, creating an almost perfect image that has fascinated generations of mountaineers, photographers and travellers.
From ‘Bulnes’, which can only be reached on foot or by funicular, the path to Urriellu is an experience in itself. Green meadows, mountain trails and the profound silence of the surroundings accompany every step, whilst the silhouette of the peak appears and disappears amidst clouds and light.
What makes it special:
Its silhouette , unique and unmistakable across the entire massif. Its history , linked to the earliest great feats of Spanish mountaineering. Its surroundings , one of the most impressive mountain landscapes on the peninsula.
Picu Urriellu is not just a mountain: it is an emotional landmark. A place that commands respect, that inspires and that connects the visitor with a powerful and authentic natural world.
There are mountains you climb… and others, like Urriellu, that you simply gaze upon with respect.
Viewing the Naranjo de Bulnes from Bulnes, in silence, with the wind sweeping across the mountain and the light shifting over the rock, is one of those experiences that define a journey.
