Rectory house
1

Rectory house

This building is one of the best examples of 18th century civil architecture in Bárcena Mayor. It stands out for its imposing ashlar facade and its characteristic solana or wooden balcony, protected by a large eave. Formerly linked to the church of Santa María, it represents the essence of the mountain style and the social hierarchy in the historical ensemble of the village.
La Franca row
2

La Franca row

This street reflects the mountain essence with its row houses and shared walls. The wooden porch was used for agricultural tasks and access to the stables. With the arrival of corn in the 17th century, the houses went from one to two floors to create the "solana", an ideal space for drying grain. This economic and architectural change meant that the solana replaced the old Cantabrian hórreo.

Barcena Mayor Bridge

The bridge of Bárcena Mayor is the most emblematic corner of the village. It crosses the Argoza River and offers a perfect view of the mountain architecture. Although its origin dates back to the sixteenth century, it was rebuilt in the nineteenth century after a flood on its traditional stone base. For centuries it has been the vital passage for neighbors and cattle ranchers, becoming today the most photographed scenery of the village.
