The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Alconada is located 3 kilometers northeast of Ampudia, in a wooded meadow. The monument traces its origins to the 12th century, when a hermitage was erected for the devotional custody of a Romanesque image of the Virgin Mary with Child, found by a shepherd named Marcos who, according to popular tradition, recovered his sight thanks to her. This Virgin became the patron saint of Ampudia and the region of Tierra de Campos in Palencia. Her feast day is celebrated on September 8.
The image of the Virgin is a very old carving, a Romanesque work of the late twelfth or early thirteenth century. It is currently housed in the Museum of Sacred Art of Ampudia, located in the old building of the convent of San Francisco.
