POI

Major Tower
Torre Major The Tower is located on the road to Alcanada, a short distance from the Port of Alcúdia and about 3 km from Alcúdia. In the year 1598 a Royal privilege meant the improvement of the entire defensive layout of the municipality, although the construction of the Tower was not carried out until the reign of King Philip III, who completed the fortification of the area by ordering the construction of a fort in the bay of Puerto Mayor, hence the name of Torre Major, which was constituted as one of the five points of coastal surveillance of Alcudia. In 1602 the coats of arms (work of the sculptor Antoni Verger) were placed over the gate, although there is evidence that in 1613 the work had not yet been completed. It seems that by 1860 the tower was already uninhabited, although its military use continued until well into the twentieth century.
