Ponts Lake
Estany des Ponts In the bay of Alcúdia there are numerous natural lakes connected to the sea by canals, reminiscent of what was once an important wetland. It should be noted that this is one of the few salt lakes in Spain. It comprises totally contrasting landscapes: mountains with pine and oak forests, the plain traditionally dedicated to dry farming and the sea. These lakes are known as l' Estany des Ponts and l'Estany Menor. L' Estany des Ponts, is the larger of the two, has an area of 40.5 ha, extends parallel to the sea in a strip of 1,500m. and an average distance of 300m. This lake is communicated with the Natural Park of S'Albufera through a channel and with the sea through two U-shaped channels that act as a spillway in case of floods. It is worth mentioning the ecosystem that inhabits it, with a great variety of plant species that grow on its banks and the fauna that lives in its waters. The western bank is rectangular in shape, with no urbanization of any kind, in contrast to the maritime strip that houses the "Lago Esperanza" housing development, characterized by the presence of the MA-12 regional road, which divides it into two parts. Recently, it has become a canoeing technical center, the Balearic Canoeing Federation holds different competitions throughout the year.
