Talaia d'Alcúdia and Sa Penya des Migdia
La Talaia and sa Penya des Migdia This route runs through the natural area of Cabo Pinar, a peninsula that separates the bays of Pollença and Alcúdia, currently preserved by the Law of natural areas of the Balearic Islands. To reach the "Talaia d'Alcúdia or Penya des Migdia", we must go to the hermitage of Victòria, we will pass near the beach S'Illot and one kilometer away from the beach, we will discover the Font de la Victòria, protected by a porch. It is a double itinerary of almost 7km. distance: you can choose between climbing to the Talaia (445 m. high) or turn off towards the "Penya des Migdia" also known by the locals as the Penya Roja, more modest in height (354 m.), but of enormous beauty. Although it is not a particularly hard route, it does require an acceptable physical condition to be able to do it. The excursion runs at the beginning by a cart path. A short distance away, on the left, are the Tres Creus, where three crosses recall the place where tradition placed the discovery of the Virgin of Victòria. We continue towards Talaia d'Alcúdia and on the left hand side we will see a path with a wooden handrail as protection, if we turn off on it we will head towards Penya des Migdia. The path runs along the cliff, it is always advisable to take extreme caution, especially on slippery ground. We will arrive at a pass built on the rock in the form of a tunnel. After this step you have to pay close attention to where you put your feet, because this last section is somewhat dangerous, although it has aids, there is a chain on the right, which we can grab. The top of Penya des Migdia is a fortified redoubt that is unique in the Balearic Islands. In the year 1630 the cannon that has survived to the present day was placed. To continue the excursion to the Talaia d'Alcúdia we would return to the point where we left the cart track and continue to the top. This route is well marked. It is the highest watchtower in Mallorca and its construction dates back to the year 1567, when it became necessary to take control of the bays and thus prevent attacks by pirates and privateers. From the watchtower we can contemplate an impressive panoramic view of the bay of Pollença and the cape of Formentor, the Pinar cape and the bay of Alcúdia reaching to sight the island of Menorca in the days in which the visibility is optimal.
