Located barely a kilometer and a half from the castle, the Covered Cross is one of the most symbolic and evocative places in Aínsa. This small circular temple, built in 1665, keeps inside the holm oak on which, according to tradition, appeared the cross that gave the victory to the Christian troops in the reconquest of the town.
The monument stands in the same place where the legend places the battle against the Saracens, origin of the story that today revives every two years in the representation of La Morisma, one of the most important historical events of the Pyrenees.
But getting to the Covered Cross is, in itself, part of the experience. The walk from the historic center allows you to walk through open fields, with the majestic silhouette of the Peña Montañesa dominating the horizon and Aínsa behind with its unmistakable medieval profile. It is a quiet route, full of light and landscape, which connects history, nature and tradition.
Visiting this place is not only to approach a memorial monument, but to go through the scenario where legend, the identity of an entire territory and one of the most beautiful views of Sobrarbe are mixed.
