Plaza Mayor · Aínsa (EN)

POI

Presided over by the Town Hall building and open to the castle, the Plaza Mayor of Aínsa is surrounded by arcades on both sides, under which the old communal presses where wine was produced are still preserved. This large arcaded space, of medieval origin, was not only the center of the economic and social life of the town, but today remains its heart. Considered one of the best preserved medieval squares in Spain, it stands out for having kept intact its structure, its stone buildings and its original character over the centuries. Strolling through it is like traveling back in time: the cobblestones, the uneven arches of the arcades and the harmony of the whole create a unique atmosphere that transports the visitor directly to the Middle Ages. Witness to the history and daily life of Ainsa, the square continues to be the scene of markets, fairs and celebrations throughout the year. Among all of them, La Morisma stands out, the great historical-popular representation that every two years fills this space with knights, torches and emotion, turning it into an authentic open-air theater. The Plaza Mayor of Ainsa is, in short, one of those places where the past is not contemplated: it is lived.
