San Antonio Portal (EN)

The San Antonio Gate, built in the medieval Gothic style, serves as the main entrance to the town and is in very good condition. Distinguished figures (nobles and officials) used this gate to enter the town.

The tower has undergone several renovations. In 1664, the door leading to the interior was closed off, and it was removed in 1884. In 1973, the balcony or machicolation was rebuilt, supported by three stepped stone corbels and pierced with arrowslits, and a grille was installed on the side facing the exterior.

The gate has a square plan with battlements and a slightly pointed archway. The exterior features a projecting balcony or barbican of a purely defensive nature. It is built of ashlar stone and masonry, featuring a window at mid-height, flanked by arrowslits. In the barrel-vaulted access passageway, the mortises for the bars that would have secured the door are preserved, as is the opening for the portcullis. Behind the tower is the old gate—now bricked up—located at a height, which would have been accessed via stairs.
