Archpriestal Basilica of Santa María la Mayor
The Archpriestal Basilica of Santa María la Mayor is one of the most beautiful churches in the Mediterranean, a true gem of religious Gothic architecture. Its façade features two doors of great architectural and sculptural interest: the Door of the Apostles and the Door of the Virgins.
Inside, highlights include the choir staircase masterfully winding around one of the columns, the scene of the Last Judgment in the transchoir, and the choir vault itself, which is extremely low, defying the laws of architecture.

The finest Mediterranean sacred artThe bare stone typical of Gothic churches contrasts with the Churrigueresque-style high altar, where the Eucharist was accompanied by the monumental organ that still survives today, created by Turull of the Aragonese school in 1719. Today, visitors can enjoy the full sound of the organ’s more than 3,000 pipes, especially during the International Music Festival of Morella, held every August. | ![]() |
The Basilica also houses a museum, the Arciprestal Museum, featuring outstanding works of religious painting and goldsmithing. Admission to the museum is included with the ticket to the basilica.
