Osma Castle and medieval bridge (EN)
In El Burgo de Osma, the complex comprising Osma Castle and its medieval bridge is one of the region’s most iconic historical sites.
History, defense, and communication in a landscape marked by stone and the river.
Osma
Castle, dating back to the 10th and 11th centuries and renovated in the 18th century, stands on a strategic rocky hill between the Abión and Ucero rivers, dominating the surroundings with a clear defensive purpose.
Built with thick masonry that even incorporates materials from the Roman era, the castle originally had four towers and two gates, forming a solid defensive system. Among its features, the Water Tower stands out, connected to the outer walls next to the river.
Medieval
Bridge:
Next to the castle is the medieval bridge, built with Roman-era ashlars and known as the Water Tower Bridge. With its three spans and semicircular arches, it connects the Church of Santa Cristina with the castle, forming a historic complex of great value.
This site reflects the strategic importance of the area throughout history, where military architecture and communication routes blend into the natural landscape.
