The province of Teruel—and, more specifically, the Matarraña region in Calaceite—is celebrating. A spectacular specimen of the Empeltre variety, popularly known as the “Olivera del Suavo,” has been honored this year with the prestigious award for Spain’s Best Monumental Olive Tree 2026.
This distinction, awarded annually by the Spanish Association of Olive Tree Municipalities (AEMO), highlights not only the impressive beauty of this living being but also the valuable natural, historical, and cultural heritage that these trees represent in the Aragon region.
A living giant over 800 years old
Located in the picturesque setting of Barranquet, within the municipality of Calaceite—recognized as one of the Most Beautiful Villages in Spain—this olive tree stands out for its imposing presence. Experts estimate that its age could easily exceed 800 years, a fact that makes it a silent witness to the area’s medieval history.
The AEMO jury was unanimous in awarding the prize, highlighting three fundamental aspects:
Spectacular monumentality: A trunk sculpted by time into whimsical and unique shapes.
Natural harmony: Balanced growth that blends perfectly into the surroundings.
Landscape and cultural value: Its connection to the region’s olive oil tradition and the identity of its inhabitants.
In addition to its undeniable beauty, the jury positively noted its proximity to the town center of Calaceite and its ease of access, making it a first-rate wine tourism and scenic attraction for visitors to the region.
A boost for sustainable tourism in Matarraña
This recognition serves as a magnificent showcase for Calaceite, reinforcing its tourist appeal beyond its imposing stone architectural heritage and its arcaded streets. As of today, La Olivera del Suavo is established as a must-see destination for lovers of nature, hiking, and photography, inviting visitors to take a leisurely stroll through the dryland fields that characterize this "Aragonese Tuscany."
The award coincides with the current dynamism in the province’s olive sector, where initiatives such as the Oliete project (“Sponsor an Olive Tree”) continue to generate employment and help retain the local population, demonstrating that the centuries-old olive groves are a vital engine for the future of Teruel’s rural areas.
