💧 Las Chorreras de Despeñalagua: The Must-See Trail in the Valverde de los Arroyos

If there is one place that defines the essence of the Pueblos Negros of Guadalajara, it is, without a doubt, Las Chorreras de Despeñalagua. Located in the vicinity of Valverde de los Arroyos, this waterfall is one of the most impressive natural spectacles in the province and a must-see for those seeking nature in its purest form.

Best of all, you don’t need to be an experienced hiker to enjoy it. It’s an easy, well-marked trail suitable for most people, offering a journey that combines scenery, tradition, and flowing water.

🥾 How to get to Las Chorreras

The route begins at the Plaza de lValverde de los Arroyos From here, head up to the village threshing floors, next to the soccer field, and continue along the path that starts at the highest point, heading toward the waterfall, visible in the distance between two hillsides.

It’s important not to veer off onto the path on the right next to the transmission towers. The correct trail continues straight ahead and, after a short climb, connects with the Cacerón Canal, an old water conduit that runs alongside much of the route.

From here, the path is very intuitive: just follow this route without straying from it.

🌳 A path through chestnut groves and historic landscapes

Along the route, you’ll pass through areas of chestnut trees and small streams that hint at the water’s proximity. Along the way, you’ll pass a few turnoffs, such as the one leading up to El Hervidero—a longer and more demanding option—but the main route remains clearly marked.

One of the most special spots along the route is La Prairuela, a small clearing perfect for taking a break. Here, in addition to enjoying the surroundings, you can see flat stones that shepherds once used to leave salt for their livestock. It’s a spot that blends landscape and rural heritage.

💦 The moment you’ve been waiting for: the waterfall

Following the course of the water, which becomes increasingly visible on your left, you finally reach the meadows of the area… and suddenly, the main attraction appears.

Las Chorreras de Despeñalagua plunge from a height of about 70 meters, forming two impressive waterfalls that cascade between walls of dark rock. The contrast between the water, the stone, and the vegetation creates a scene of great visual impact.

In winter, moreover, the waterfall can freeze over, offering a completely different, almost surreal image. In spring, on the other hand, the surroundings come alive, with flowers like the well-known “campanones” appearing among the vegetation.

⛰️ Is it worth climbing to the top?

It is possible to climb to the top of the waterfall, either via a longer trail or through more direct but challenging routes. However, this is not a recommended option for most visitors, as it involves dangerous and slippery areas.

The views from the top are spectacular, but it’s important to exercise extreme caution and avoid any unnecessary risks.
