The Nuevo Baztán Interpretation Center presents the exhibition “Porcelain for the Kings of Spain: The Production of the Royal Factory of Buen Retiro.” Visitors can enjoy a selection of porcelain tableware, vases, and figurines produced at this Madrid-based factory between 1760 and 1808.

Porcelain has a long history. It began three centuries ago in Meissen (Germany), where Augustus II the Strong, Elector of Saxony and King of Poland, established the first Western porcelain factory.

Meissen’s success spurred the creation of other factories across Europe to produce porcelain similar to that of Saxony. One of these was the Royal Porcelain Factory of Buen Retiro, founded by Charles III in 1760 with Italian technicians and artists from the Royal Porcelain Factory of Capodimonte, established in 1743 by the same monarch under the name of Charles VII, then King of the Two Sicilies.

This exhibition presents the public with a selection of objects made of soft and hard porcelain, chosen from the collections of the National Archaeological Museum and the Museum of History in Madrid.

The exhibition begins with works produced in Meissen and Capodimonte, and continues with the most characteristic pieces from the Madrid workshop: tableware, sculptures, vases, and flower pots.

The exhibition is curated by María Ángeles Granados Ortega, a graduate of the Autonomous University of Madrid and Curator of the National Archaeological Museum.

The exhibition will be held in the two halls of the Juan de Goyeneche Palace and will be open to the public from March 11 through June 7 during the following hours:

Tuesday through Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Sundays and holidays from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Organized by the Department of Culture, Tourism, and Sports, Directorate General of Culture and Creative Industries, and the Secretariat of Fine Arts, in collaboration with the Nuevo Baztán City Council
