Alcalá del Júcar
Alcalá del Júcar is located in the northwest of Albacete province, in the region known as La Manchuela. It was declared a Historic-Artistic Site in 1982. In 1986, it was awarded third prize - after the Eiffel Tower and the Grand Mosque of Istanbul - for the best artistic lighting. On 30th May, 1998, the village council received the Castilla La Mancha “Tourism Award 1998” in Villanueva de los Infantes for its work in the promotion and development of tourism.
It is one of the most spectacular and picturesque villages in Albacete province. Its location, in conjunction with the exceptional landscape of the Júcar gorge, conspire to make us stop in our tracks in order to better contemplate it in all its grandeur.
Its houses are built in the traditional, local style and excavated into the mountainside. They follow the profile of the underlying terrain along steep and narrow streets which wind their way up towards the Castle overlooking the river gorge. Its population is divided into 6 nuclei:
It is known that towards the eleventh century it was a Muslim fortress, part of the defensive line built by the Arabs on the banks of the river in order to defend against growing pressure from the Christian kings.
Do not miss a visit to the Castle, Roman Bridge, Bullring, beautiful Ermita de San Lorenzo and Church of San Andrés.
The village's unusual location means that most of the houses are excavated into the mountain itself, where there are caves so long that they reach the end of the rock upon which the village rests. Three of these caves can be visited.
