Tradition, music, and celebration in the heart of the city.

Designated a Festival of Regional Tourist Interest, this celebration brings together thousands of Trujillo residents and visitors who gather in the Plaza Mayor to share a day filled with dancing, folk songs, and tastings of traditional foods.

The origins of El Chíviri lie in the old livestock fair that was held in this very same space, an event that over time evolved into a popular festival that has kept its open, participatory, and festive character intact.

One of the most striking aspects is the traditional attire. Women wear the traditional shepherdess costume, with a refajo or pollera, while men wear the shepherd’s costume or the characteristic red neckerchief. This detail lends a strong sense of identity and historical continuity to the celebration.

Music takes center stage: folk songs, jotas, romances, and compositions by local poet Gregorio Rubio, known as “Goro,” are performed accompanied by traditional instruments such as lutes, bandurrias, guitars, flutes, tambourines, and drums. All of this creates a vibrant atmosphere in which it is impossible not to join in.

The most iconic moment comes when the entire square sings and dances to the rhythm of the song “El Chíviri,” which has become a symbol of the festival and a true hallmark of “Trujillo.”

It is a celebration where tradition and joy merge, offering a unique experience for both residents and those discovering it for the first time.

Participating in the Chíviri means experiencing “Trujillo” from the inside, on a day when music, folklore, and togetherness fill every corner of the city.

A festival that is sung, danced… and lived as a community.
